What You Need to Know About Rear Markers for Tractor Units as per ECE 70
In the following text you will learn about the various marker boards for heavy or long trucks or tractors. What are the differences?
Marking Boards for Tractors and Motor Vehicles in Transit Traffic
The objective of retro-reflective rear marking plates is to warn other people about the abnormal dimensions or the low speed of a vehicle, even in poor light conditions. Especially at night or on foggy or rainy days, another signalling vehicle sign can help to prevent accidents.
For best conspicuity results, it is important to bear in mind that rear marking plates are available in two reflectivity classes: while the initial ECE regulation 70.00 stipulates a reflectivity performance of class RA2/C, the up-to-date version 70.01 requires class RA3/C.
Since stronger reflectivity means better visibility and hence more safety, we recommend marker boards as per ECE 70.01.
How to Find the Right Rear Marker Board
GUIDE A: Retro-reflectivity or fluorescence?
Rear marker boards for tractor units or motor vehicles show alternating slanted stripes in yellow and red. The yellow stripes are always retro-reflective, while the red stripes can be either retro-reflective (corresponding to board class 3 as per ECE 70) or fluorescent (corresponding to board class 1 as per ECE 70). Which one of the two versions you opt for is your own choice, i.e. they are legally interchangeable.
GUIDE B: One large plate or several smaller plates?
Depending on the vehicle body, you may find full, half or quarter marker boards more suitable. Full markings measure 1130 x 130mm and are fitted as single plate to the rear. Half markings measure 565 x 130mm and must be mounted in pairs to the rear. If you display quarter markings (283 x 130mm), you need to attach four of them to the back of the vehicle.
GUIDE C: Permanent or temporary application?
In our shop, you can choose between several different ways to attach your rear plate(s): The marking sign as self-adhesive film is the most convenient option for a permanent usage, while a magnetic sign offers high flexibility, making it the perfect choice for temporary usage. A marking plate made of aluminium combines both possibilities: It can be used permanently or removed / attached as needed.
