Rear Marker Boards

Long or heavy-haul trucks and trailers in transit traffic are required to display rear marker plates. Also, slow-moving vehicles with a maximum speed of 40 km/h need to be fitted with special plates on the rear. Please find more information on the different types of rear marker plates in the text below.

What are the different types of rear marker plates?

Depending on the vehicle’s journey and characteristics as to speed and/or width, length and/or weight, rear marking plates are mandatory according to European law. The UN regulation ECE 70 stipulates that these marker boards are fitted in addition to rear lights in order to increase the vehicle’s visibility and inform other road users that this truck or trailer is extraordinarily large and may be quite slow. ECE 69 is limited to slow-moving vehicles with a maximum speed of 40 km/h.

Rear Marker Plates as per ECE 70

Long or heavy-haul trucks and trailers in transit traffic must have special rear marking plates when passing through particular countries. The plates help to speed up and facilitate customs processing. In some countries, these ECE 70 marker plates are mandatory whereas in other countries they are only optional. They are required for the drive-through in the following countries:

  • Austria
  • Suisse
  • Belgium
  • Netherlands
  • Luxembourg
  • Poland
  • Italy
  • France
  • Spain
  • Great Britain

You may come across two versions of the ECE 70 plates: the ECE 70.00 and the ECE 70.01. The ECE 70.01 is an updated edition of the ECE 70 rule, and hence includes some higher demands than the older version. However, the rear marker boards for ECE 70.00 and ECE 70.01 are basically the same. They mainly differ in the film’s reflectivity performance: The ECE 70.01 marker board provides more conspicuity than the ECE 70.00 plate.

Some countries have already switched from ECE 70.00 to ECE 70.01 plates in their regulations. Therefore, we only offer the highly reflective boards as per ECE 70.01 in our shop. If you are interested in the ECE 70.00 versions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Five Categories of Rear Marking Boards for Tractor Units and Trailers

There are special plates for tractor units and trailers / semi-trailers, so the rear marker boards differ in size and design (including colour and retroreflectivity). According the stipulations of the UN regulation 70.01, there are five categories of rear marking boards:

Class

Vehicle/haulage feature

Vehicle type

Design

1

heavy haulage

tractor unit

stripes in fluorescent red and reflective yellow

2

long vehicle

trailer & semi-trailer

border in fluorescent red, centre in reflective yellow

3

heavy haulage

tractor unit

stripes in reflective red and reflective yellow

4

long vehicle

trailer & semi-trailer

border in reflective red, centre in reflective yellow

5

special utility

tractor unit & trailer

stripes in reflective red and reflective yellow

Correspondingly, the reflective film is imprinted with RR, which stands for retroreflective-retroreflective (applicable to classes 3, 4, 5), and RF, which means retroreflective-fluorescent (applicable to classes 1 and 2).

Other Differentiators Between Rear Marking Boards

Measurement is another distinctive feature of rear markers. You can choose between full, half and quarter markings.

EU regulation ECE 70.01 requires reflectivity class RA3/C while its previous version (ECE 70.00) stipulates only a weaker retroreflectivity of class RA2/C.

In our shop, you find rear markers as self-adhesive films (stickers), flexible magnetic films or aluminium plates.

Rear Marker Plates as per ECE 69

ECE 69 plates are mandatory on vehicles that cannot go faster than 40km/h (so-called slow-moving vehicles).

Following the example of ECE 70, there are two versions of the UN regulation ECE 69: ECE 69.00, being the previous version and hence requiring lower retroreflectivity (RA2/B), and ECE 69.01 with its more demanding stipulations as to retroreflectivity (RA3/C).

Our ECE 69 rear markers are available as self-adhesive film (sticker) or steel-sheet plate with edge trims.
